By Chuck Woodbury

I have seen the future in Scotland -- the future of RVing.

I've been in Scotland now for three weeks, exploring the countryside -- the big towns and the little villages (lots of them). Everywhere I go, the roads are packed with motorhomes and travel trailers. In the United Kingdom, travel trailers are called caravans. Those who travel with caravans or motorhomes (sometimes called campervans or motorcaravans) are called caravaners.

RV parks are everywhere and are called caravan parks. Most are non-descript grass-covered fields with designated campsites (called "pitches"). The cost to stay is about the same as in the U.S. -- $25 to $40 a night in our dollars. Most offer hookup and non-hookup sites. Holing up in a freebie place is called "wild camping" -- the U.K. word for "boondocking."

The cost of a liter of unleaded gasoline here is roughly about 1.10 British pounds -- which translates to about $9 or $10 a gallon in U.S. dollars. Ouch! But the steep price isn't stopping the "caravaners." In Oban the other day, on the West Coast, a parade of motorcaravans (small motorhomes) passed through town one after another, morning through evening. I was amazed at the numbers.

Most caravans (trailers) are in the 15- to 20-foot range. Motorhomes seldom exceed 24 feet with most 18 to 22 feet. They look a lot like the fuel-efficient U.S. motorhomes built on the new and very popular Dodge Sprinter chassis. Only rarely do you see a motorhome here with dual wheels in the rear: 95 percent have only four. Of the thousand or so RVs I have seen, only three were recognizable American brands. The big diesel bus-type motor coaches favored by full-timers in the USA are absent. They would be a tough fit on the mostly narrow, two-lane roads of this country.

Trailers are pulled by four- and six-cylinder cars and vans. If you listen closely when a motorhome passes you will hear the tick-tick-tick of a small, fuel-efficient engine. There are no fifth wheel trailers in Scotland, and only a few truck campers. You very seldom even see a pickup truck. RVs don't have slide-outs. Instead, many, many RVers pack along a tent patio which attaches to a caravan outside its entry door.

Europeans have paid a lot for petrol for a long time unlike we North Americans who are still in shock over seeing the cost of our own fuel more than double in the last couple of years. The Scottish newspapers report that caravaning is more popular than ever despite rising fuel prices. In fact, with so many RVs on the road, a new term has been coined -- "caravanger," as in "caravan anger." The term applies to the feeling of drivers stuck behind a slow caravan on a two-lane road.

IN AMERICA, with our wide roads, larger RVs are much easier to maneuver. And until recently, how much fuel they burned wasn't much of a factor in the cost of RV travel. But suddenly, the high cost of fuel has become an issue with Americans and Canadians to the point where many are traveling less or even selling their rigs.

Here in Scotland, I see the future -- where RVing is as popular as it ever was in the USA or Canada, but with most RVers traveling with smaller, more fuel-efficient rigs. What I have seen leads me to believe that while RVing in America is going through a tough time, as the months and years pass and more RVers opt for smaller, more fuel-efficient rigs, the pace of RV travel will return to where it was when our fuel was cheap.

And a final note: if you are looking for a beautiful country to visit, put Scotland on your itinerary. A great way to get around is to rent a motorhome.

Cheers!

RVer puts an end to his fifth-wheel's rock and roll
RV trailers are designed to "rock and roll" a bit to compensate for uneven road conditions. When you're parked in a campground, though, you don't want to feel trailer movement as you move about inside. This RVer had too much movement in his trailer, so he designed his own stabilization system. See what he did.

As oil prices go down, RVers cross their fingers
Maybe we shouldn't hold our breath, but we can at least keep our fingers crossed now that the cost of a barrel of oil is going down. In many places, pump prices have decreased, too. Is the fuel price nightmare finally over? Read contributing editor Russ De Maris's thoughts on the subject. Click here.

Display your personalized campsite sign automatically
Many RVers like to display a personalized sign at their campsite with their names, home town or other information. It's a friendly gesture, but you've got to erect the sign at each campground and remember to retrieve it when you leave. These RVers found a way to display and stow their message automatically. Take a look at their clever idea.

Why RVing is still the most affordable way to travel

This promotional video from Coachmen shows in a very entertaining way, why travel with an RV is still a heck of a lot less expensive than travel by other means. If you need a little extra convincing of this after filling up your gas tank, then take a few minutes to watch this. Or pass along the link to someone who thinks RVing is way too expensive for them. RV which one: Gulf Stream Innsbruck or Forest River WW Lite?
We are totally new to RVs and have decided that the trailer is the way to go. We have a choice on a 1997 Gulfstream Innsbruck or a 2004 Forest River Wildwood Lite for an additional $5000 over the 97. Obviously the 2004 is nicer, but $5K is a lot to us also. The 97 is in good shape and we're having it inspected. My question is that while the fridge and A/C and furnace, etc., all work well, what is the experience on major repairs on the big ticket items? If replacement of major appliances etc on the 97, now 11 years old, is imminent, should we be going with the newer 04 Forest River? Regular maintenance has been done on the 97 and it doesn't get much use; however, it looks a bit weathered from being parked outdoors. Also if I do go with the 97 Innsbruck, does anyone know where I can get an owner's manual?

Digital thermostat
I have read on some link that the Hunter Dig Thermostat (42995B) can be used in RVs (to replace analog types) for heating and cooling. I have a Dometic A/C and Suburban heater in my fifth wheel. Can anyone back up this info up for me? I would appreciate it. These digital thermostats are priced at near $20 at Wal-Mart.

Roadside assistance
I'm a newbie to RVing and getting ready to hit the campgrounds for the first time. Was wondering if roadside assistance coverage is worth the investment if you do not have it on your insurance? We have a 1988 Coachmen Leprechaun with a little under 45,000 miles in pretty good mechanical condition and really nice in the RV section. Any pros and cons to roadside assistance?

Aluminum frame construction
I know that Holiday Rambler and Allegro are of aluminum frame construction. Are there any others?

Dead RV
This is a very complicated problem. We took our 97 Catalina into a large Ford dealership (that repairs RVs) to have the gas tank dropped and a new float installed. The mechanic said the gauge on the dash wasn't working on completion of the job. He replaced the unit in the dash. We also had a problem with the right rear brake light. He rewired that. It's still not working properly. We drove the RV approximately 40 miles and then it died. Nothing works - the battery, 2 deep cell batteries - dead. We had another mechanic friend check everything out. We were able to recharge the battery and are now recharging the deep cell batteries. We were told the alternator and converter were showing nothing - dead. We took the alternator out for testing - it showed ok. UGH! It seems the power is interrupted from the back of the RV to the front. Nothing is working? The original mechanic is deciding on a plan and will let us know more in a few days. HELLO - the RV was at the dealership for 3 weeks. Our bill was $2500. (17 hours labor). Does anyone out there have any ideas?
