By Chuck Woodbury

I drove from northern California to Seattle earlier this week. It's a 12-hour drive, which leaves a lot of time for observation and reflection. I love to drive because it gives me time to think about everything going on in my life. It also allows time to simply look out the window and watch what's going by.

There were two surprises on this week's drive: first, the price of gasoline had dropped about 50 cents a gallon from the week before when I drove south. In Oregon, I paid $2.79 a gallon for regular unleaded gas. That was the first time in a very long while that I had paid less than $3. Filling up my car's 10-gallon tank for $27 compared to $43 just a few months ago was a very nice experience. I'm sure RVers with their much larger tanks would appreciate the savings even more.

But what surprised me the most was the parade of RVs heading south. They were all snowbirds in fifth wheel trailers and big motorhomes towing dinghies. These were not campers out for a weekend, but folks headed south for the winter -- on their way to the warm climes of Southern California and Arizona. In recent years, I can't remember ever seeing so many RVs on the road at one time except maybe in Yellowstone in the summer. What this says to me is that this year's RV snowbird season will not be a wash out as some camping industry experts have feared.

And what I saw that did not encourage me
Along I-5 from northern California to northern Washington, you drive by dozens of RV dealers. From the highway you see thousands upon thousands of RVs. And on this trip, what struck me as unusual was how packed the lots were with RVs of all kinds from huge big rigs to small pop ups. As I passed one dealer after another, I began to conclude that it would take a long, long time for all these RVs to sell, based on the dismal pace of RV sales these days. And until these 2008 model RVs get cleared off the lot, you wonder how many 2009 model RVs will roll off the production line -- nowhere near normal, I suspect.

The upside to this news is that if you are thinking about buying an RV, it must be an incredibly good buyers market right now. Check out your local RV dealer. If you see something you like, make a ridiculously low offer -- so low it's not even in what you would consider the ballpark. I bet a lot of such offers will get accepted by some very hungry RV dealers.

Famous RVer of the past
One of the most famous Americans ever was an RVer, although few people ever knew. For decades, he was one of the best-known men in the world. With his RV, he and his wife could escape from the masses and find solitude. The man was famed aviator Charles Lindbergh. In the 1940s, Henry Ford learned that Lindbergh was looking for a travel trailer. Although Lindbergh wanted to buy one, Ford insisted he take one he had bought for a museum. It has since been described as a "huge brown elephant" on wheels. A week later taking delivery, Lindbergh hooked up the trailer to his car and drove off. He and his wife Anne traveled in it off-and-on for the next 15 years, a place where they could live and write in peace. Today, the trailer is on display at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.

Trivia
What do athletes drink when thirsty? Gatorade. Did you ever wonder how the product got its name? Well, it was invented in Florida for one of its best known college football teams. Practicing under the hot sun often left the players hot and dehydrated. The new drink provided great aid for the University of Florida Gators!

RV Boondocking Tips

Trick helps slow a gray water tank from filling so fast

A reader named JJ (pictured in photo) left this tip in the RVtravel.com reader forum:

If you are boondocking, you have to be careful that you don't fill up your holding tanks too fast. I don't know how it works with couples, but I'm a solo RVer and it takes longer to fill up a black tank (about a week) than a gray tank (two days). So what I do is when I am boondocking, I wash dishes in a Rubbermaid tub, and then dump the waste water down the toilet. This helps dilute the black tank to empty better, plus lots of soap to add to the mix, and keeps me from filling the gray tank. Please check out my blog on RV'ing without a tow car.

Are you a veteran boondocker? Would you please share some of your tips and tricks at our RVtravel.com reader forum? We'll reprint some of your comments in this newsletter each week.

RV Tech Tip by Mark Polk

Help control musty orders in closed up RVs
When your RV is closed up or in storage it can get a musty stale odor inside. To help avoid this from happening invest in some Maxx Air vent covers. They are easy to install or you can have your RV dealer install them. They fit over the existing vent covers on your RV and allow you to leave the vents open even when it's raining outside. By placing one towards each end of the RV you have constant ventilation.

Learn how to winterize your RV with Mark's best-selling DVD.

Trailer rock & roll
I have a 36-foot travel trailer. When I set up the trailer, it moves a lot. I have noticed that the stabilizers have a lot of flex in them. I am looking at the power twin stabilizers. Has anybody used them?

RV insurance recommendation?
Not sure what is the best insurance company for my RV Class C 30'. Would like to hear from you all about this concern.

Newbie: need help trailering
I have the opportunity to buy a 1992 Sierra 30 foot trailer in very good condition. My dilemma is whether or not I have enough truck to do the job. I have a 1993 GMC Suburban K1500. I've looked all over the internet and all the talk about GVWR, GVW, GCWR, formulas, yadda, yadda, yadda has me totally confused. My questions are pretty simple: Will my Suburban do the job? Does anyone have any experience towing this size trailer with my size vehicle?

RV Capital Wholesalers
Has anyone bought from RV Capital Wholesalers? They used to be known as RV Direct Wholesalers. I have seen posts on other forums from people who have bought from other internet "factory direct" dealers, but never this particular one.

Motorbikes on van
I have a 2005 Pleasureway van. I'm thinking about hauling a motorbike of some kind, and so asking if anybody has done this. What kind of bike or scooter does one use, and is it better on the back or front?

Glass cracked on Dometic freezer door. Help!
I have a Dometic Designer Series RM2807. The panels on the front of the freezer door and the main door are a very nice smoked glass with beveled edges. I left the door unlatched and it swung around and cracked the glass. Does anyone know where I can get these glass "inserts" or if not, where I can buy some "inserts" to replace both of them that match? I have tried Dometic.
