Dear reader, I believe the Swine Flu scare is way overblown. Do you remember flesh eating bacteria, bird flu, mad cow disease, anthrax, killer bees? I know people who will still not eat hamburger because they believe they'll get Mad Cow disease.
Newspaper publishers and TV news producers must love the Swine Flu: A scary headline is good for circulation.
"We consumer reporters should warn you about life's important risks, but instead, we mislead you about dubious risks," says consumer reporter John Stossel of ABC news. "My TV program, 20/20, has done frightening reports on the dangers of paper shredders, soccer goals, lawn chemicals, cell phones, garage-door openers, and more," he said. "There's always some truth behind the scares -- someone got hurt, or some study somewhere found a risk. But we rarely put the danger in perspective. We give you a breathless rush of alarm over every possibility, often delivered with a throbbing rock beat."
AND NOW IT'S THE SWINE FLU: Only one person has died in the USA and Canada so far. Cases have been mild. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) every year in the United States, on average more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications, and about 36,000 die from flu-related causes. As of April 15, outpatient flu-related visits to U.S. hospitals were normal.
"We know that the scarier and more bizarre the story, the more likely it is that our bosses will give us more air time or a front-page slot," said Stossel. "The scary story, justified or not, will get higher ratings and sell more papers. Fear sells. That's the reason for the insiders' joke about local newscasts: 'If it bleeds, it leads.'
I came across a Twitter posting earlier this week. The woman was terrified she would die shortly of the flu. "Maybe I'll see you here tomorrow," she wrote to her followers, and she was serious!
As the news broke about Swine Flu deaths in Mexico, I worried at first, based on a hundred scare headlines. But my nature is to be optimistic until I have good reason to be pessimistic. So I (selfishly) looked for the positives about Swine Flu: "It will probably be good for the RV business, just as 9-11 was," I told my associates. I figured people would be afraid to get on a plane so they'd hop in their RVs, maybe even buy one. Armed with a bottle of bacteria-killing hand sanitizer, they'd hit the road where the major bug threat is a mosquito.
So here's my (unprofessional) advice: Don't overly fret about Swine Flu until it comes to your town and people die. Until then, wash your hands often, don't go to work or school if you are sick, eat healthy, don't kiss any pigs, and go on with your lives. The media will scare us with something new next month.
Most RV Travel readers would toss TVs in favor of Internet If choosing between giving up television or the Internet, 76 percent of RVtravel.com readers would give up their TVs according to the results of last week's reader survey. "You can always catch your favorite shows on the Web, so the TV would have to go," commented a reader named Cheri. See the complete results and reader comments.

Fix RV cabinet doors that don't stay closed The roads we travel with our RVs are often a bit on the bumpy side. Some of the nation's highways can best be described as "washboard" in nature, and it's a real discourager when you open the RV door and find your cabinet doors have popped open, snapping back and forth, damaging finishes and loosening hinges. How can you keep those RV cabinet doors shut? Here's how.

RV Boondocking Tips
A first step to curing a stinky holding tank By Russ and Tina De Maris
Holding tank odors are a bane for RVers, but often they can be simply cured. If your tank sits for a long time without motion, say boondocking or in an RV park for months on end -- a sour tank is often a result. So, what to do? We swear by the natural, enzyme and bacteria friendly variety. When our "green black water tank" goes sour, here's the first fix: Dump the black water tank and refill with fresh water -- and dump it again. Now drop a pound box of baking soda down the toilet and again refill the black tank with water. Let it sit overnight and dump again. Now recharge the tank with your bacteria friendly treatment following the maker's recommendations.

Photo of the week Okay, what to do? So here's the scene: You're tired of driving. You need a break. You need to park for some R&R. But here's where you are right now -- where this pic was snapped. So the question is, can you park? For those who stop, well, maybe they're just a bit too blind or stupid to be at the wheel in the first place, eh?
Add valve stems if you have dual wheels If you have dual wheels, you will want to add extension hoses to the valve stems to make the job of checking tire pressure easier. A word of caution: if you add extension hoses, you will want to replace the rubber valve stems with all steel valve stems. The added weight of the extension hoses can cause rubber stems to leak air resulting in underinflation.

The good ol' days. . .
How did the campers of the 1920s and '30s impact the nation? As auto-camping became more popular in the late teens and early 1920s, campers and their families began to demand safe and interesting places to go where they could camp with their tents or primitive RVs. The growth of the National Park system answered that need. Plus many towns, especially in the South, recognized this trend by establishing city-owned campgrounds to attract these travelers. Many such campgrounds still exist, most in the Midwest.

Sewer hose falls out during dumping. Nightmare! I was staying at Cedar Rail Campground in Raton, NM (near the CO border). It's a great campground. While dumping my black tank, my hose fell off! I was horrified! I started dousing water on it, dish soap, vinegar, baking soda, borax, even dumped some of my toilet chemical on it. I told the park owner that if he had to hire someone to clean it up, I would reimburse, etc. I tried to give him some money as a "sorry about that" offering. He wouldn't take it. Has this happened to you and how did you handle it?
Military campgrounds Anyone here use FamCamps or have any recommendations on good ones or ones to stay away from? How about good boondocking locations near military services for retired members?
Slideouts in windy conditions - In or Out? If it gets really really windy, do you leave your slides out or do you pull them in? Does it depend if you have slides on both sides or slides all on one side? I have had RVs with slides on one side and slides on both sides. Each time if the wind comes up, I pull the slides in. I'm not an engineer, but my "theory" is that if the slides are in, the weight from the slides is more "centered" and will prevent tip over.
Showers on the road Aside from public shower facilities available at parks and RV camps, what other showers are available when 'boondocking'?
