Animal rights group proposes fishy way to save Calif. state park

With California in a big financial pickle, many proposals have come forth to rescue it from financial ruin. None are more bizarre than the proposal from PETA -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. PETA would be willing to help keep Pescadero State Beach open if state officials would simply change its name to Sea Kitten State Beach.

The term "sea kitten" is an effort to evoke the same sympathy for fish that people feel for cats and dogs, said PETA Manager of Campaigns Lindsay Rajt. "Pescadero means 'the place to fish,' so we thought by renaming it 'Sea Kitten State Beach' we could make it the place for fish instead of fishing."

Asked if not renaming the beach to include the term "sea kitten" is a deal breaker, Rajt said: "It would be." Although if the state agreed to prohibit fishing at the beach in return for funds, PETA "would perhaps consider it," she told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Pescadero State Beach was among the 219 state parks targeted for closure under Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's plan to erase a $26.3 billion deficit. The park has a mile-long shoreline with sandy coves, rocky cliffs, tide pools, fishing spots and picnic facilities. There is no campground.
