The Winston-Salem Journal says the company owners are excited about the product, and the "full circle" that makes it possible to fuel up your 18-wheeler (or RV) with bio-fuel. "It's where we grow it, we make it, we sell it," said Dean Price, the owner of Red Birch truck stop and a co-owner of Red Birch Energy. "Everything is within house. We don't have to go anywhere else to get the fuel." Red Birch Energy contracts directly with area farmers to grow Canola, a seed crop rich in oil, that they then have crushed and prepared into motor fuel. At this time the truck stop sells B-20, meaning a mix of 20% canola oil and 80% grade-2 diesel. The bio fuel will run your diesel engine perfectly without any modifications. In the future the company hopes to sell other "grades" of biodiesel, too.Is it expensive? The outfit sells biofuel at $4 a gallon. Of that, a dollar is company profit. The owners of the firm say they're trying to do their part to make the country as energy independent as possible. Eleven farmers in the area are contracted to raise the canola crop; they get paid $9 a bushel for their efforts. The company looks to expand its operations in the future.
