I'm a full-time RVer as well as a member of the Sierra Club, the National Wildlife Federation and the Defenders of Wildlife. No, I don't hug trees: I leave them alone, protect them when I can and admire them from a distance.
I carry wild birdseed and chicken scratch in my toad so wintering birds don't have to work so hard to survive. When I camp, I put a container of birdseed on the picnic table just in case. By the way, seagulls love dry cat food.
Spare change goes towards feeding the local feral cats. Eventually, they will trust their feeder, allow themselves to be captured, taken to the veterinarian, examined, spayed or neutered, and then released to the same area.
I remind people to be especially careful driving in the early morning or late evening so the deer population can continue to grow. Smaller animals like raccoons and opossums sometimes don't quite make it across the road in time to avoid an oncoming vehicle.
Many campgrounds and RV parks have recycling bins for aluminum cans, glass, plastic and cardboard. If you're traveling and the campground or RV park doesn't recycle, try to find a place that does. If you're home and there isn't a recycling place nearby, ask for one or start your own. Grassroots recycling areas have sprung up everywhere. Trash that is not recycled will end up in a landfill and plowed under, adding to an ever-growing hill of garbage. Just a reminder: when you buy six-packs of soda or other drinks, cut each of the plastic circles before you dispose of the plastic holder so a bird or other small animal won't entangle it around its neck and perhaps choke.
Good Sam has an annual clean-up program where members of the local clubs take large bags provided by Good Sam and pick up trash in their area, usually along a stretch of highway. Some clubs have adopted a park, a lake or a cemetery to care for. I think there should be a special place in hell for people who throw trash in a cemetery or deface a grave marker. There's no reason why you can't pick up and dispose of trash wherever you visit.
In the great grand scheme of things, I may not be doing much but I'm doing something to lessen my impact on the planet. I hope you can find a way to do the same. Think before you throw it away.
