In emergencies, RVs can save the day

I live in California. Even before I had an RV, I had an “earthquake kit” in the trunk of my car: tent; sleeping bag; air mattress; Coleman stove; cooler; lantern; enough water, food and prescriptions for three days; warm clothing; socks; catalytic heater; space blanket; matches; flashlight; compass; whistle; first aid kit and extra batteries. When I bought my motorhome, I gave much of my kit to my friend so he could be prepared. Now, with my RV, I have enough food for two months, 25 gallons of fresh water, two batteries, a full tank of propane and everything I need to ride out an emergency.

The end of summer is here and most stores will have sales on their camping gear during Labor Day weekend. I strongly suggest that you pick up what you think you will need for an emergency. Food and water can be rotated with your home pantry so you won't be caught with expired food. A generator is inexpensive insurance if you decide to ride out an emergency at home. A winter storm can knock out power for days, leaving you and your family cut off from heat, light and communication.

My advice is to make a trip to your local camping supply or surplus store this weekend so you will have what you need. Take advantage of sales on all types of batteries from AAA to deep cycle batteries. Have a sleeping bag, food, water, stove, cooler and other needed items ready just in case. Conduct a disaster drill with your family and neighbors.

Preparing for the worst is good insurance that if an emergency does arise, you'll be ready to respond to it immediately, and have a much better chance of riding it out without major hardship.
