Boondocking Tips |
|
|
Here's just a few quick tips I have used when I dry camp and I always dry camp.
Use toilet paper from Costco. It is septic tank safe and a lot cheaper than RV TP.
Use a one-gallon bucket in the bathroom to collect the cold water from the shower tap before it turns hot enough to shower. Use this water to flush the toilet.
Don't throw your TP in the toilet. It only clogs up the black tank anyway and makes the gauges read all goofy. Keep a covered small trash can in the bathroom for the TP and dump it in the outside trash.
Use your inverter to watch TV in the evening, not the gennie.
Use paper and plastic products or do dishes using two small tubs of water: one with soapy water and one with clean water to rinse. It will beat the heck out of filling up the sink and turning the tap on and off in your RV.
If you have the choice of using electric or gas as I do for hot water, heat, use the electric on generator and save your LP gas. You just never know where you can get it. _________________ Desert Rider

I can go along with most of those but this comment: | Quote: | | Don't throw your TP in the toilet. It only clogs up the black tank anyway and makes the gauges read all goofy. Keep a covered small trash can in the bathroom for the TP and dump it in the outside trash. | I find that unheathy and gross.
I have had half a dozen RVs in my days and have yet to get a black tank clogged up, let alone clogged up cuz of TP. If one uses one-ply TP, they are fine and you can buy it in any store. I have bought it at every major store chain across the US. Also if you add water to your flush, you should be fine. And if you rinse your system good, you will never have problems with gauges. _________________ Lee and Fran

These are contradictory statements.
If you're not going to throw your toilet paper in the toilet, then what difference does it make whether or not it's septic tank safe?
I know there are people who put their toilet paper in a bag sitting by the side of the toilet, but...like Utmtman...I find that unhealthy and gross! I never did that when I lived in a sticks and bricks, and I'm sure not going to do it living fulltime in our RV.
We've been fulltiming since 1998 and have NEVER had a clog in our black tank caused by anything, and certainly not toilet paper. As long as you use plenty of water when you flush, particularly when you flush solids (think in terms of a full toilet bowl full of water), you should have absolutely no problems flushing toilet paper down into the tank. And, after dumping, make sure you recharge the black tank by putting in several gallons of water before using it. _________________ LindaH

Clogged Black Water Tank |

I have had one clogged and it isn't any fun. So I don't put tissue in tank. _________________ Freedom is a Motor Home, open Highway, and time. |

Recently I was reading an article about this problem and the tech mechs claim that most all clogs are caused by two problems: parts from the original installation or building of the RV plugging the drain and second, not using enough water. I have had a few times when one of my black tanks has been acting like it would not drain and I added more water, and after a couple of attempts, it finally drained. I use all the tissue I need to use. _________________ Lee and Fran
