Hi, my wife and I live in the UK and currently own a 31-f00t Gulfstream Class C motorhome in the US. We are now trading this in for a Pilgrim fifth wheel/truck combination and will miss the generator.
What do you other fifth wheelers do for power when not hooked up at a campground? I've been told I can get a portable generator, but where do I locate it and how do I connect it to the power supply? I understand that some Honda models come with a remote start. Does anybody have experience of one of these models and roughly how much they cost?
Planning our next trip from beginning of October until Christmas and taking our current motorhome from LA across to Atlanta where we will swap it for the fifth/truck, then will be spending the trip in Florida.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Ian and Gill Campbell, Norfolk UK.

Yes, you can get a portable generator for the fifth wheel. Just be sure it's a QUIET generator like the Honda or Yamaha inverter models, not an industrial generator that is very LOUD! Yes, you'll pay more for the quiet, inverter models, but you also won't alienate everyone in the campground.

You connect the generator to the fifth wheel's power supply just like you would if you were in a campground using their electricity: you plug the RV's power cord into the generator.

As far as I know, the only Honda and Yamaha generators with a remote start are the larger, 3000-watt, generators. These are heavy (about 150 pounds), so may not be suitable for your use.

As to where to buy them, do some online searches for either Yamaha generators or Honda generators. Here's just one place that sells both brands, but there are lots of others, too: Wise Sales.

Hi and thanks for taking the time to respond, and for the link to Wise Power.
Haven't done too much research yet but we know that Honda generators are pretty quiet and that it is a good kit as well. I guess the Yamaha is as good and they seem a bit less expensive as well.

Thanks again.

Ian.

Ian,

We have a large 5th wheel trailer. We use a Honda 2000 for all of our dry camping electrical needs including the microwave and computers. The only thing it won't run are the air conditioners. If we had a 3000 it would do one of the AC units as well. The Honda is very quiet and economical. We keep it on the truck and only bring it out as needed.

FWIW if you don't need the microwave, a Honda 1000 will do for the trailer electrical needs and be even more economical.

Two 125 watt solar panels on a auto sun tracking frame with a 3000-watt generator for backup. Have a good day.
