Put on a hat for privacy

Occasional conflicts of privacy are inevitable when two people live in the confines of an RV. Sometimes one member simply wants to be left alone for a while to read, write, work on a business report, practice a musical instrument, or do some other project that requires concentration.  The one who needs to concentrate can ask for privacy, but without a visual reminder the other often absent-mindedly interrupts anyway.

Here's a suggestion: put on a hat to indicate a desire for an undisturbed period. Chances are you don't wear a hat inside the RV for any other purpose, so the sight of the hat would be a conspicuous cue that questions, comments and unnecessary noise are, for now, unwelcome.

Of course, flexibility is essential. If the mate's cell phone rings and the call cannot be taken outside conveniently, the hat-wearer should be expected to tolerate the conversation. And if one RVer is watching TV (or waiting for a program to begin) when the other wants to put on a hat, discuss priorities. Perhaps the TV could stay on until the current program ends. Perhaps it could stay on at reduced volume or with captions only.

As travel planners, navigators, budgeters and trouble-shooters, RVers already wear several hats. What's one more?
