We have stayed in rest areas occasionally due to lack of planning on our part or needing to get somewhere fast, and have found the truckers we met helpful, entertaining, as well as friendly. We have not had a bad experience and hope fully never will.

Have done it on occaision, but only when all else fails, too tired to continue etc. safety at this time is #1 priority, even parking at malls, strip malls, etc, one of my fears is waking up, going outside and finding the rig covered with grafiti! could happen, were deep sleepers!

Our experience with highway rest stops is that no one is allowed to spend the night there. We have stopped for awhile at several and taken a nap but never overnight. There is usually security of some kind. Seems to me if you have a rest area then you ought to be able to sleep there or be a statistic because you had a wreck due to lack of sleep.

Some of the rest stops in TX have security at night - I arrived very late at the new one in Amarillo and the security guard came over to tell me of a better spot - away from the big rigs and in a safe area. I was traveling alone, exhausted and appreciated the help.

There is a big difference in "camping" in a rest area, and over-night parking. There is also some liability on the state if they send a tired, sleepy driver back out on the road. This is why they are called "REST AREAS".

I try to park back towards the rear of the big rigs to get away from their cabs or find a spot behind the big rig pull in for peace and quiet (almost).

he northern part of hyway 287 in Texas south of Amarillo has two of the best rest areas that also double as tornado shelters. You can feel very safe overnighting there. Mrsten39

The best rest areas are in British Columbia and Yukon in Canada. Large quiet turnouts along the highways. Room for a dozen RVs, but seldom saw more then 3 or 4 others. They frequently were along side a river. No facilities or cost, but some of the nicest "camp grounds" we have found.
