you must keep most pestasides and commerical fertilizers off the land for 3 years. There are many natural fertilizers like growing legumes in between other crops or the use of various manuers. There are also solutions of bugs and other pests as well. Contact you local farm extention.

Having working farm stands for two farms that actually are organic, I know that produce wholesalers package the same (not organic) product in regular and organic, for the same price, to groceries and stands. I think that people who have not personally grown their own gardens cannot tell the difference, although their bodies can.

we try to grow our own here on the homefront, freeze or dry and carry with us. The only thing "organic" we buy is honey because we like the local mesquite honey for our allergies. We drink a cup of honey & vinegar tea daily for our health. The local honey helps quiet allergies and the apple cider vinegar has many health benefits including for arthritis and gout. 1 tsp. vinegar in a cup of hot water and sweeten to taste with honey. mmmmm good.

We, fortunately, can and do grow most of our vegetables organically. We grow 4 varieties of berries and have apple and cherry trees at our summer location.

I was buying tomatoes and corn from the local Mennonites because I thought they were organically grown. It turned out that they used as much or more spray (and fogging) than anyone else because of the demand for their products. Live and learn.

I gotta disagree sharply with "Anonymous". Processed foods are never organic, otherwise why go to the trouble of processing organically. "Organic" means no pesticides, sprays, or artificial fertilization. So "organic" will not be as pretty as non-organic. It will cost more than non-organic. It tastes better than non-organic and is a whole lot less risky to your health than non-organic.

We buy fresh vegetables from roadside stands whenever practical, frozen vegetables when we have the freezer space, and canned vegetables because we have the pantry room. We full-time and our refrigerator offers limited storage space for fresh vegetables and fruits so we usually buy them in season and consume them the same day. "Organic" is such a generic word - if you think about it, even processed foods began organically.

Since making organic foods our main staple we have had no health issues and eat less (hence lose weight naturally) due to the larger nutrients in Organics. While Organics are far more expensive, it is actually more cost effective for health and vitality reasons. And of course EVERYTHING taste better.
