With the way they hack into store records, there really is no difference anymore. I shop online which is usually the only time I use a credit card. Had a problem a few years ago with someone in England charging something. CC company took care of it pronto. Someone brought up restuarants. We have gotten so we do not want them to take our card out of our sight. We were at one and I was following the guy around until he finally got to the place to run it. It was a Mexican rest. and the guy did not understand that I did not want it out of my sight.

I have been shoping online using my credit card for 20 years.I spend a lot of money online. Only once was there a problem and the bank caught that before the purchase was made. They stopped it, called me to verify that it was bad then issued me a new card.

We have a seperate card we use just for internet/phone purchases and campground reservations. Makes it easier to keep track of our purchases and identify any potential problems.

We always use one time card numbers that are issues by our bank. You can limit the total to just what your charges will be, therefore if anyone got hold of the number it would do them little good.

I have used Discover on the Internet for years because the let me download and use a different number for each merchant. It has never been used by anyone else. I also use a free anti-virus software, the firewall that came with my computer and a couple of spy ware programs.

We keep one credit card that we use only for internet purchases. We did have one problem with someone from South America using our card. My wife called the company and they stopped the purchase immediately. My wife also checks periodically on the status of the card. My father had his card number stolen at a motel so I feel safer on the internet than face to face.

When you expose your credit card at a local merchant, you have to worry about two opportunities for abuse - one when then scan it to the internet, and one from that person(often a teenager) that just took your card and ran it. And when you sign your name at a resturant and leave the slip on the table - look to see if all 16 digits are visible. Anyone could pick up that slip and they have your number and potentially, your signature.
